Challenge:

Address a water ingress problem in a high-volume consumer wearable as a member of a team of 3 mechanical engineers.

Result:

  • Designed, fabricated, assembled, and shipped functional assembly line fixture for an USW flash trimming operation in a total of 10 working days

  • Completed architecture and detailed Alpha design for a waterproofing concept

    • Leveraged successful watch plunger design

    • Created form factor prototypes to evaluate tactile feel

    • Worked within significant electrical and mechanical design constraints due to program maturity

  • Conducted a DOE on sealing geometry (adhesive-based) to direct detailed design on alternate waterproofing concept

  • Created an assembly fixture for selected waterproofing solution

    • Conducted initial brainstorm and downselection

    • Designed and fabricated proof-of-concept for testing during small-run domestic product build

    • Implemented design learnings and created revision of fixture for deployment at top-tier CM during product EVT build

    • Personally trained operators on line for use of the fixture

    • Fixture design was maintained and replicated for use in mass production

Skills:

  • Tolerance analysis

  • Vacuum fixture design

  • Seal design

  • Overseas Build Support
